Why is sustainability important?
We live on a small island with limited resources. Space, forests and water are all limited. Whether we are farmers, fishermen, shop owners or restaurant owners we all make our living from tourism. Tourists come to Koh Phangan for it’s beaches and wild nature, if we destroy these then people will stop coming and we all lose out.
By thinking about how we use the resources on the island more efficiently, by shopping locally more money is kept on the island. If you buy locally it might seem more expensive (not always), but in the long run people on the island have more money to buy your things and then we all benefit as more money stays on the island.
It is possible to make more wealth even selling less if we start to think differently about the way we shop and run our businesses.
“Upon this handful of soil our survival depends. Husband it and it will grow our food, our fuel, and our shelter and surround us with beauty. Abuse it and the soil will collapse and die taking humanity with it.” Vedas Sanskrit Scripture 1500BC
